Yarm guide

Shops in Yarm

Yarm High Street is one of the best places in the North East for independent shopping. In a few hundred metres of Georgian shopfronts you'll find women's boutiques, a 160-year-old department store, two art galleries, two florists, a fishmonger and a handful of delis, plus a Waterstones and a Boyes for the everyday.

This guide covers what's where, what each shop is best for, and which ones open on a Sunday.

Fashion and boutiques

Yarm's clothes shops are mostly independent and mostly aimed at women. Wild Elan (33 High Street) is a relaxed, modern boutique mixing established and emerging labels with accessories and lifestyle pieces. Attitudes Womenswear (86 High Street) offers a curated range of contemporary womenswear with a personal service, and Triads (32 High Street) is a long-established North East independent that has moved onto the High Street.

For a special occasion, head to Danby Wynd, the lane off the High Street. Prom Boutique (10 Danby Wynd) covers wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses and prom wear, and Fitting Room at the same address has more than 25 years of experience altering bridal and occasion wear. Two doors down, Ultra Football Shirts (2 Danby Wynd) is something different: vintage shirts, rare kits and football memorabilia.

Gifts and homeware

Start at Strickland & Holt (44 High Street), a Yarm institution for more than 160 years, with gifts, fashion and homeware under one roof and a café inside. Upstairs, Fourteen Drops Markethall stocks over 200 wines alongside a deli counter. Cloud Cuckoo (31 High Street), open since 2009, is the place for thoughtful gifts, hand-painted furniture and home décor. Boyes (45–47 High Street) covers the practical end, with homewares, crafting kits and pet supplies at bargain prices, and constantly changing stock.

Waterstones (97 High Street) is a cosy, community-minded branch with a good range of local books and gifts, and it's dog-friendly.

Art galleries

Yarm has two galleries within a few doors of each other. Lucy Pittaway (61 High Street) sells the award-winning North Yorkshire artist's originals, prints and homeware, which make easy gifts. Yarm Contemporary (51 High Street) shows modern and contemporary work, including pieces by emerging artists, for anyone buying original art for their home.

Florists

The Flower Room (23 High Street) is Nicola's independent flower shop, with bespoke arrangements, plants and a handpicked range of vases and pots. Diana Kaye (77b High Street), which also has shops in Richmond, Newcastle and Gilling West, handles bouquets and event and wedding flowers, and sells gifts alongside.

Food shops and delis

Danby Fish (4 Danby Wynd) is a family-run fishmonger with a daily selection of fresh fish and shellfish, dressed lobsters and seafood platters. Next door, Borrelli Delicatessen (3 Danby Wynd) is an Italian deli with cured meats, cheeses and olives to take home, plus coffee and panini. At the other end of the High Street, Café Nossa (109 High Street) is a Portuguese deli selling wines, cheeses, cured meats and pastries.

For baking, Cooplands (60 High Street) has been making bread and cakes since 1885, and Deep North (30 High Street) is an independent scratch bakery known for handmade doughnuts. Just outside town, Hutchinson Hobbs at Holdenfields Farm is a farm shop and butcher with locally hung meat, artisan bread and regional cheeses.

Everyday essentials

The Pet Quarter (38 High Street) stocks premium pet food, treats and gear with specialist advice, and Yarm DIY (143 High Street) has tools, paint, fixings and friendly local advice for home projects.
