360° virtual tour · 2006

Yarm, rewound.

In 2006 a 360° camera went the length of Yarm High Street, then into its pubs, shops, wynds and church. Twenty years on, it's a time capsule. Drag to look around, follow the arrows to walk, and see how much has changed.

What's inside

Where to look first

The High Street

Both sides of the cobbled High Street, east and west, with the shopfronts as they looked.

Inside the Town Hall

Climb the stairs of the 1710 Town Hall that stands in the middle of the High Street.

Pubs, cafés and shops

Step inside the Black Bull, The Keys, Yarm Bookshop, Yarm Cycles and dozens more.

Wynds, church and river

The wynds, St Mary Magdalene, True Lovers Walk and the view of the viaduct from Yarm Bridge.

Twenty years ago

Yarm in 2006

These pictures were taken months before a BBC Breakfast poll named Yarm's the best High Street in Britain, and three years before Google Street View reached the UK. The iPhone hadn't been launched yet.

Some of the names in the tour are still trading. Others have changed hands, moved or closed, and a few shopfronts you won't recognise at all. Have a wander and see how many you remember.

Getting around

How to use the tour

  • Look around. Click and drag, or swipe on a phone, to turn on the spot.
  • Walk the street. Click the arrows on the ground to move to the next spot.
  • Jump to an area. Use the menu along the top to go straight to the river, the shops, or the bars and restaurants.
  • Go full screen. The icon in the top corner gives you the full effect.
Coming next

Yarm, twenty years on.

We want to photograph the High Street again, from the same spots, so you can step between Yarm then and Yarm now. Got photos or memories of Yarm in 2006? We'd love to see them.
